The Daily Discussion - Robbie Keane the Man to Save West Ham?

By Alex Henshaw

Wolves, Coventry City, Internazionale, Leeds Utd., Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic, West Ham. The name Robbie Keane is now synonymous with ‘Journeyman’.

News has just broken that the Dubliner, who has scored a prolific 45 goals in 104 games for the Republic of Ireland, has joined West Ham on loan for the rest of the season. The Hammers are hoping that Keane, alongside new signings Wayne Bridge, Gary O’Neil and Demba Ba, will help stave off a potentially ruinous relegation from the Premier League.

From a prodigiously talented 17 year old debutant for Wolves to a potential Boleyn Ground saviour, the 30 year old has been subject to a cumulative total circa £75m in transfer fees.

So can Avram Grant and theWest Ham faithful expect the kind of form form Rafa Benitez placed £24m worth of faith in and will Keane be the talisman that he has for so long promised but not quite delivered?

I've got mixed feelings about Keane's arrival, but more good than bad. He has a good overall scoring record (see Wikipedia) but has not scored a lot recently, except in Scotland for Celtic, but the competition there is not as high quality as the Premiership.

I'm not convinced he's better than Piquionne or an in-form Cole, but Piquionne can't do it all on his own and Cole is inconsistent.

On the other hand we haven't had a proven, consistent scorer for a while now, going back to Tevez or Bellamy. Potentially that's what Keane brings to the squad. He might not get loads of goals, but I'm pretty sure he'll consistently get one here and there.

I think the club have done well in the transfer window, especially for a club at the bottom of the league. The addition of Bridge, O'Niell and Keane has certainly improved things, with Ba as a bit of a wild-card which might pay off.

Paul,

I agree that the club has done well in the window, and i'm looking forward to seeing Keane link up with Piquionne especially.

The Ba situation is a bit of a strange one for me though. What changed inbetween him failing a medical at Stoke and passing one at West Ham?

Great bit of business for me. Keane not only brings huge energy and experience to the training ground but matches it with a much needed creative spark on the pitch.

I can see him and Obinna playing off Piquonne/Cole. Parker/Noble/A Nother making up the midfield 3. Big shame that Collison and Hitzlesperger have not been around all season to complete that menage a trois. Good luck Paul.
