The Daily Discussion - The Most Abhorrent Player In The Premier League

By Si Warner

Ever since his turbulent arrival at Anfield in the summer of 2002, El-Hadji Ousseynou Diouf’s persistant on-field antics have established him as, arguably, the most unpopular Premier League player of all time. His sudden departure to Glasgow last week has re-ignited the debate surrounding the most vilified players currently gracing our stadiums each week.

Now clearly your own team of preference will protect obvious contenders of contempt but every fan has a footballer that really gets under their skin. And understandably. There would appear to be a plethora of choice at present in the Premier League but I am going to resist listing a host of likely candidates and instead offer the subject question up for discussion. The most abhorrent player in the Premier League? Over to you.

Incidentally Diouf’s return to Parkhead in a few weeks will be very interesting. Google “Diouf – Phelgm – Celtic supporter” for confirmation.

Good discussion topic. I think I may have to split my answer in two: most abhorrent off-field and most despised for on-field antics.

Such a shame that Diouf has left the Premier League as he fits the bill perfectly for both. His spitting antics and recently alleged comments against QPR’s Jamie Mackie as he lay on the turf with a broken leg would easily have him as my no.1 on-field choice. The fact that he has been convicted of drink driving and accused of punching a Senegalese team mate’s wife in a Dakar nightclub shows he’s more than capable of being a toe-rag in his spare time too.

In his absence, I have to turn to either Cesc Fabregas or Didier Drogba. The former has assumed a real petulant and nasty streak recently making him an easy target for his detractors. It would appear that he has a real chip on his shoulder having been yet again talked out of a move back to Barca last summer by Wenger. He needs to sort it out quickly.

Drogba, whilst one of the Premier League’s best ever players, frequently epitomises everything wrong with the game. For a man with such strength and athleticism to be found crumpled on the floor with alarming regularity is a disgrace. Additionally, his post-match rant to Sky cameras following Chelsea’s last gasp and controversial exit in the Champions League to Barcelona has shown who easily he can bring the game into disrepute.

Off field – Joey Barton. Need I say more?

It really is the easy option to throw stones at Joey Barton, he has done some ridiculous and heinous things off the field and on.
However lets try and get a little perspective.

The last two seasons he has had a good disciplinary record, better than most other players in his position. He has been an absolute leader on the field, as shown in the amazing comeback against Arsenal. He has caused no off-field ructions and despite massive provocation from rival players - Henry from Wolves kicking lumps out of him is just one example, not knocking the fudge out of Diaby on saturday is another - he has only reacted badly once to Pedersen of Blackburn. He is obviously being targeted by the opposition to get him to react badly, and to be fair to the lad he obviously realises this.

I am not excusing any of Joey Barton's past misdemeanours, however he suffered from alcohol problems which for the past three years he has apparently overcome. I actually think the lad is turning into a good example of a player that has reformed his life on and off the field.

The undeniable fact for me is that he is the best performing English player this season, yet he won't even be glanced at for the England squad. I believe the lad needs a break, judge him on the past couple of seasons and you will see one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League.

Completely agree with the on-field analysis. Has been an absolute inspiration this season amd in his interviews he seems to have a level-headedness not previously seen.

I only hope that i'm proven wrong with his off-field antics. As a City fan I heard many promises of successful rehabilitation that never happened.

What a player though

I actually admire Barton's honesty. There are many more sneaky players I dislike.

You wouldn't admire someone putting a cigar out in your eye though.

Boom!

I don't even understand the point of this discussion.... Darren Fletcher is clearly the most repulsive player in the league.

I forgot about that odious cock

Quite like little Darren myself and I am quite surprised by hatred for him on here. Yes, he does have an annoying, winey face but he is no CESC FABREGAS!

Kevin Muscat. Not playing in PL anymore, but historically, surely one of the worst

If we are looking at players no longer in the Premier League, Cristiano Ronaldo would get my vote. Yes he is phenomenally talented but he is such a preening, flouncing, drama-queen cockmunch.

I would have happily tore my own leg off to beat him to death with during the 'Wink-Gate' saga.

Odious. I would honestly prefer Wayne Routledge for Newcastle than Ronaldo, that's how much I dislike him.

What you got against old Wayney Snoutledge?

Attila the Bum said...

Nothing fundamental, he just isn't that great in the Premier League - hence why he is back at QPR. My point was that I'm happier with a lesser talent than the more talented nobgoblin.

I will chuck another name out there. Andy Wilkinson. Stoke. 'Orrible.
